The Wedding of Libby & Trent
Libby & Trent held their wedding reception in Alabaster at Victoria Park. Recently the pair sat down to discuss their big day with the Victoria Park team.
Tell us about your journey together, from how you met, to what the proposal was like!
Trent and I met in February 2017 on Tinder. We went on 4 dates in the first week and were officially dating not long after. He was in Brisbane for work (originally from Gosford, NSW) and we spent a year together dating and falling in love in Brisbane. In May 2018, Trent moved to London for work and we began what we thought would be 12 months of long distance. However, in April 2019, he was headhunted and moved to Sydney. The long distance continued and we built the best communication skills and we learnt to appreciate every little text, call or fleeting weekend together that we could organise.
We planned a trip to New York for April 2020 and Trent had elaborate plans to propose on that trip. However in late March 2020, I was visiting him for a weekend in Sydney and we heard that the state borders were closing indefinitely in a few days. Trent decided he couldn’t wait and he proposed in his bedroom, just 20 minutes before we had to leave to get me to the airport. We sat in the Virgin Australia lounge and drank champagne for an hour before I took off to Brisbane. Unfortunately, we remained apart, on opposite sides of the closed border for 7 months and we planned our wedding online. Skip forward to May 2021 and he finally moved to Brisbane and our long distance days were over!
What (besides the obvious ‘I do’) was your favourite part of your wedding?
We had fireworks at our reception and we kept this detail a secret from most of our wedding guests. It was the best decision and their reactions were priceless.
Tell us about your decorations and wedding styling – did you incorporate anything new / a theme? What did you choose for your wedding entertainment and guest favors?
From the beginning, we decided we would only invest money in the elements that we thought our guests (and us) would remember and cherish. For us, the venue set the tone. We fell in love with Victoria Park through their online gallery and booked it site unseen in the height of our first lock down. Next, we selected our photographer and videographer (Sunlit Studios) to help us capture the day. We had minimalistic styling (light pink, greens and silver), organised by Beautiful Weddings and they nailed it.
Our favourite element of wedding entertainment was our photobooth (Photobooths Australia), as it provided fun and memories to keep. We had personalised candles for our guest favors by Blue Dominic and I actually won a 50% off voucher for them from the Victoria Park Wedding Open Day in September 2020. Additionally, we had polaroid cameras around the room for guests to capture their own shots. My only regret is assuming that people still knew how to use flash on these cameras. If you plan to do this, print instructions or else you’ll end up with lots of dark images.
What’s the best piece of advice you can give other brides to be?
My biggest piece of advice is to slow down and enjoy the process. Wedding planning can be stressful, but I think your mindset sets the tone. Ask your fiancé, bridal party and family to help out if need be. Also make sure you only invest on things that are going to spark joy to you and your guests. Sometimes you get lost in the finer details and they will often go unnoticed.
Would you recommend Victoria Park to other people getting married?
Absolutely! Victoria Park has so much going for it. The location is central and the grounds are stunning. The food is delicious and they have a huge range of menu options to choose from. But most of all, the staff and events team are incredible. Nothing is ‘too hard’ and they are more than happy to help. We had to postpone once and they were phenomenal and made the process super easy. Also, 6 weeks out from our new date, we decided to downsize the room and move from a sit down to a cocktail wedding and they were so accommodating to help this happen. There is no better place to get married.
